For the mature patient desiring a less invasive weight loss surgery program,
Harper surgeons offer the Lap-BAND® (Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band). The
Lap-BAND® is a flexible band placed around the top of the stomach. Patients who
have a BMI of 40 or more are considered to be morbidly obese and may be
candidates for adjustable gastric banding. Age and motivation are criteria
considered when evaluating people for this form of surgery.
This procedure does not require cutting and reconnecting the intestine. The
band works by decreasing the amount of food that can be eaten at one time.
Patients can expect to lose between 50 - 70% of their excess body weight over
three years.
The Lap-BAND® has been used in Europe for years. Surgeon Dr. Michael Wood
studied the procedure in Europe and then was part of the Federal Drug
Administration's clinical trials completed in 2001. Our doctors have performed
thousands of procedures using the Lap-BAND.
